Our graduates provide leadership and solutions for challenging nutrition problems.

Personalized Curriculum

The Master of Science in Nutrition allows a personalized selection of coursework to meet individual career or educational goals. A total of 9 credits of core courses are required, with 2 credits of either independent study or scholarly project, and 19 credits of electives, with a minimum of 13 credits from N&D elective courses. These courses provide unique opportunities to strengthen your understanding of human nutrition and give you an edge in the field.

Admission & Degree Requirements

Certificate in Health and Wellness Coaching

N&D graduate students can complete our health and wellness coach training. The National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) has awarded UND approval status for the Certificate in Health and Wellness Coaching. Students who successfully complete the 3-class sequence, attend all live training, and complete 50 coaching sessions will meet the requirements to take the Health and Wellness Coaching Certifying Examination.

Graduate Nutrition Classes

N&D 545. Nutrition in Disease Prevention and Wellness. 3 Credits.

An exploration of prevention and wellness models specifically designed to decrease the mortality and morbidity of chronic disease in the United States population. The course focuses on the involvement of optimal nutrition and health behaviors in prevention of disease and promotion of wellbeing that encompasses a whole person perspective. Prerequisite: Admission to the program. SS.

N&D 550. Nutrition Education and Program Planning. 3 Credits.

Theoretical, research and applied aspects of adult nutrition education. Curriculum design models, instructional tools, program planning and evaluation of education interventions will be discussed in the context of chronic disease prevention. Effective teaching strategies and procedural models for designing effective nutrition education programs targeting the general public will be presented. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. On demand.

N&D 560. Nutrition and Health Coaching. 3 Credits.

This course develops and strengthens advanced nutrition coaching skills and nutrition counseling interventions using the evidence-based motivational interviewing style. The focus will be on attending to client-centered orientation and building therapeutic relationships through engaged communication skills. Core competencies explored with an emphasis on enhancing practical skill development through video demonstrations, real play, case studies, creative reflection, practice sessions with instructor feedback, and facilitated group discussions. Prerequisite: Admission into the program. F.

Licensure Statement

The UND Master’s of Science in Nutrition online program in and of itself is not intended to lead to professional licensure. Depending on your state of residence, the UND Master of Science in Nutrition – Nutrition Education and Counseling and Nutrition Science specializations can be an essential component of the educational requirements toward professional licensure for nutritionists in some states.
